Liga MX: Leon release renderings of new stadium
Club Leon unveiled official renderings of their proposed new stadium on Twitter on September 24th
A club with the history of Club Leon deserve a state of the art stadium and judging from the video the official account posted on the weekend they will get just that. The seven-time Liga MX and five-time Copa MX champions will be leaving their current home, the Estadio Leon, after more than 50 years.
The new stadium is slated to open in 2021 but some reports have suggested that it will not be fully ready until 2024. As with many things concerning football clubs the full details are under wraps but the internet is abuzz with rumors that the stadium will be built in time for the 2021 season with further expansion planned in the years to come.
The initial capacity for the stadium is set to be 35,000, a small improvement on the current 31,000 that the Estadio Leon holds. A browse through Reddit forums on the topic suggest that the club plans to expand that seating to 50,000 by 2024 but the priority is to build the new stadium as soon as possible so Club Leon can leave their current troublesome situation.
The current Estadio Leon is one of the jewels of Mexican football and it was home to several matches in both the 1970 and 1986 World Cup, including the legendary quarterfinal between West Germany and England in 1970. Leon have played in the stadium since it opening in 1967 but a recent ownership dispute went against the club and they have been scrambling to find a permanent solution.
After mulling over the idea of purchasing the stadium from the current owners, the Leon ownership group decided to focus their new efforts to a new stadium and it is beginning to come together. The club plans to revitalize the area surrounding the new stadium with retail shops and restaurants to make for a dynamic match day experience for the Leon faithful.
