The one-time central defender who lifted the 2011 FIFA U-17 WORLD CUP for Mexico has yet to debut with the senior team despite his current achievements with his club, Feirense in Portugal. Briseno is a diamond in the rough who could fill in some gaps for the Mexican National Team.

Antonio Briseno, the central defender for Feirense, was recently included in the best starting eleven for the First Portuguese Division for his outstanding performance in Feirense’s week 7 match. Briseno did not make much of an impact in Liga MX. He struggled for playing time with Atlas, Tigres, FC Juarez and Veracruz, but has finally made his name relevant in Europe. Briseno, as we know has had a rocky career at just 24 years of age! Might he provided something that is missing for El Tri?

In the summer of 2017, Briseno took a risk on joining Feirense, a club with not much history in the Portuguese league, where yet again he battled for a starting position due to injury that kept him on the sideline.

Briseno’s current performance with Feirense in the recent weeks has declared why the central defender deserves a call up to the national team. He’s proven himself with a total of 810 minutes as a consistent starter. So far, this season appears to favor Briseno’s future performances with his current club.

Many will remember El Pollo, who wore the captain band the entire FIFA U-17 World Cup tournament, scoring against Uruguay in the final and lifting the World Cup trophy. It was Mexico’s second U-17 championship.

“El Pollo’s” history with the national team of Mexico goes way back. At a very young age, he participated in the majority of Mexico youth national system (U-13, U-15, U-17, U-18, U-20, U-21, U-23),  but he has yet to capture an opportunity to participate in the process with interim manager, Ricardo Ferretti.

Mexico lacks, or better yet searches, for a leader that they once had in the past years, at the moment. Players like Andres Guardado or the great Rafael Marquez are gone, and the team needs a new leader for the new cycle, leading them to Qatar 2022. With all the descriptions and achievements Antonio Briseno has under his resume so far, it is clear that he certainly deserves a call up, sooner rather than later!
