Chivas announces Captain to leave the club after Esperance Tunis match
Carlos Salcido, Chivas club legend, is set to officially leave the club after the Club World Cup is finished. On Monday, December 17th, the official Twitter account for Chivas De Guadalajara threw the Mexican Football Twitter-community into a buzz of activity. Club captain, former youth product and long time servant of Chivas, Carlos Salcido is to leave the club during the winter transfer window.
Carlos Salcido grew up near Guadalajara and progressed well within the youth setup until receiving his senior team call up in 2001. Following on from a successful stint with Chivas, reaching the semifinals of the Copa Libertadores in 2006, he went on to spend 6 years in Europe, first at PSV Eindhoven, and then English Club Fulham.
Salcido returned to his boyhood club Chivas in 2014 and went on to win 5 trophies in 3 years, including a Liga MX/Copa MX double in 2017 and a CONCACAF Champions League in 2018 under Matias Almeyda. He has no doubt cemented his place as a legend of the club.
It is important to remember Salcido’s contribution to the Mexican National Team, as well, where he participated in 3 World Cups (2006, 2010 and 2014) and heavily featured in various other International Competitions, such as the Confederations Cup 2005 and Gold Cup 2007.
After the announcement by the club yesterday, it was initially uncertain whether Salcido was retiring or whether he is going to move on to another club, with PSV a likely destination given his close links to the Dutch club.
Univision Deportes’ respected Journalist Karina Herrera came out shortly after the announcement to state with seeming certainty that Carlos Salcido is definitely not retiring but will move on to another club after the Club World Cup Tournament in Abu Dhabi. Chivas plays Esperance Tunis in the 5th place playoff game after losing to Kashima Antlers earlier in the tournament.
Chivas have already begun a process of revamping their squad, with the high-profile purchase of Toluca forward Alexis Vega along with the purchases of Liga MX veterans: center back Hiram Mier from Queretaro and Necaxa midfielder Villalpando.
It has been apparent for a long time that certain departures are to be expected, such as the controversial imminent sale of Orbelin Pineda. It is logical for Chivas to want to move on from a player of Salcido’s age in order to bring in someone younger. It is clear that the reshuffling of the squad will continue into the New Year with more incoming players almost certain to happen.
Regardless of where he goes, Carlos Salcido can be sure of a great send off after his final game against Esperance Tunis. He will forever be loved by the Chivas faithful and fans of El Tri, too. He can be considered one of the most successful club captains Chivas has ever known and he is still well-loved in PSV too.
I wish him all the best for his future. Gracias Capitan!
