Club America was in a tough spot just a few days ago after failing to secure a Guido Rodriguez replacement. Las Aguilas went from being linked with Robert Piris Da Motta and Renato Tapia to finally having their man in Santiago Caseres.
In what seemed to be a shocking move Las Aguilas announced the signing of Argentinian defensive midfielder Santiago Caseres. Caseres is a Velez Sarsfield academy graduate. In 2018 he left Argentina and joined the Spanish side, Villareal.
In his first season with Villareal, Caseres played a total of 35 games where he managed to score once and had 15 yellow cards. One of the flaws in his game is that he picks up a lot of yellow cards. As a defensive midfielder sometimes the job can get dirty so some of those yellows come with the territory. It will be interesting to see how he adapts to the Liga MX.
Caseres has a very similar style of play to Guido Rodriguez. Caseres is a player with a lot of technique and presence in the middle of the field. He also likes to play with the ball on his feet and can do it really well. If Santiago Caseres and Richard Sanchez learn how to play well together, they have the potential to turn in to one of the best midfielders in the league.
With the club making the signing official Miguel Herrera and Santiago Baños are betting on a young player again. The new philosophy adopted by the club is having not only an impact on the pitch but also off the pitch where the club has generated millions of dollars with the sales of players to Europe.
Caseres joins Club America on loan with the option to buy at the end of the Clausura 2020.
