The national team of Mexico holds a fortune of players that have placed their time and dedication for their country throughout the history of the team but, there have been a few numbered players that have played a large number of games that have stood out.

Our Viva Liga MX team took the time in search of various players that were an essential part of the national team of Mexico in the past years to see who were the top players that played over 100 games in appearance for El Tri.

  1. Claudio Suarez- Defender- 177 games

El Emperador (The Emperor) comes in the first place as the most capped appearances for Mexico and arguably respected as one of the top defenders to put on the Mexican jersey because not only was Suarez a wall in the backline but his leadership qualities extended for many years. Suarez participated in two World Cups, 1994, 1998 and was surely going to be part of the 2002 roster but with an injury leading to the prestigious tournament, Suarez was held out.

The 2006 World Cup, Suarez was also included in the roster but saw no action in what probably his presence was to give pointers and experience for the team during the World Cup. El Emperador also participated in the 1999 FIFA Confederations Cup and three CONCACAF Gold Cups, 1993, 1996 and 1998. Too many perspectives It will be tough to reach the total games that Suarez had in the history of the national team of Mexico, he was a rare breed.

2. Andres Guardado- Midfielder-158 (Present)

El Principito (Little Prince), since 2005 is in the scene of the eyes of many Mexican fans, Guardado comes in second place with 158 appearances with El Tri. Guardado has been a key figure for Mexico for more than a decade since his appearances have stretched up until this date. With four World Cup participations, 2006, 2010, 2014 and 2018, also four Gold Cup participations, 2011, 2015 and most recently 2019. As well, most importantly two Copa Americas and two Confederation Cups, Guardado resume speaks high volume by all means.

3.Rafael Marquez -Defense-147 appearances

The last two decades, Rafael Marquez for many has been considered an elite player to put on El Tricolor jersey as he has participated in 5 World Cups, 2002,2006, 2010, 2014 and 2018 not to mention as well holding the captain wristband for the majority of many tournaments Mexico participated in almost 150 appearances Marquez was part of. Marquez a dependable defender holds probably one of the highest IQ as soon as he stepped on the field for any team as he could create plays from the backline or simply shut an offensive player with his defensive skills.

4.Gerardo Torrado & Pavel Pardo-146 appearances

Both Torrado and Pardo come in a tie as their participation with the national team of Mexico have been over a 10 year period. Pardo participated in two different World Cups, 1998 and 2006 as well as winning two CONCACAF Gold Cup tournaments and winning the 1999 Confederations Cup. Pardo was a key player since making his debut for the national team of Mexico in 1996 stretching almost until 2009 scoring well over 10 goals throughout that time. Just like Pardo.

Torrado also is known as El Borrego was probably one of the strongest midfielders that possessed many abilities in the field that led him to participate in three different World Cups, 2002, 2006 and 2010. Torrado also time with the national team of Mexico extended from 1999-2014 has he was a reliable player that had good vision on the field and confidence in distributing the ball from the bottom of the field to anywhere that the ball needed to be placed.

Overall, the national team of Mexico has produced many notable players and will continue to reach the limits these players placed. It is obvious that all is remaining is to win an actual World Cup but time will tell if that will be even possible. Although the list continues as Jorge Campos, Ramon Ramirez, Carlos Salcido, and Alberto Garcia Aspe as well had over 100 appearances with Mexico. We could not forget those legends as their career impacted the national team of Mexico during their tenure.
