Gerardo Lugo recently made some news while the Liga MX is still on pause due to the COVID-19, where he leaves everything behind after a successful career. Lugo has a resume to be proud of as his career extended for 14 years.

Gerardo Lugo started his career in 2006 with Cruz Azul but it wasn’t until 2007 when the midfielder finally made his debut in the Liga MX against Atlante and made remarkable plays with various club teams across the league even was included to be part of few teams in the European continent. Lugo recently went on an interview with ESPN Deportes and stated that he had nothing else to prove and that he lost the interest and desire to continue playing as he achieved a lot of challenges as a player.

“It is time, I was no longer enjoying it, at the end of the day you say I have managed to be playing finals almost every year and today I am suffering to find a team”

Lugo played with a total of eight teams (Cruz Azul, Puebla, Morelia, Santos Laguna, Tigres, Veracruz, Queretaro, and Herediano) throughout his 14-year career and won various championships with almost every team the midfielder played with.

With Cruz Azul Lugo won the Copa Panamericana in 2007 and managed to win a Liga MX title with Tigres in the Apertura 2015 and a Copa MX in the Clausura 2014 as well, won the Copa MX with Veracruz in the Clausura 2016 and with Queretaro Lugo won the Copa MX in the Apertura 2016 and the Supercopa MX in 2017. Most recently with the Costa Rican team, Lugo played with, Herediano, the now-retired player won the CONCACAF League in 2018.  So it is understandable why Lugo mentioned he has nothing else to prove to himself or anyone.

“I am happy for what I have achieved, since I was little I had been able to achieve things that every player wants, like being a champion, reaching the national team, things like that. And today I turn around and I see that many of those I could get and it is what leaves me calm to the effort, the sacrifice and everything that has to be done to get those things ”

The retired midfielder also had a stint time with the National team of Mexico for a brief period in 2012 and only got to play four games but although it was a small amount of time it should still be respected that Lugo was able to put on the Tricolor jersey, a dream that almost every player has in mind to play and defend the national team colors.

So to Gerardo Lugo, thank you for the memories and enjoy your free time and whatever the next chapter is for you, please enjoy it!
