Prior to the Apertura 2020 to start in less than a month, the FMF will have an attractive mini-tournament that will begin from the 3rd of July to the 19th called the GNP Cup.

With a lot of attention returning to European based Mexican players as they get back to regular play, we turn our attention back to Liga MX. Liga MX will be back a bit quicker than we expected as the league made an official statement that a mini-tournament will take place in less than a week, that will be held in two stadiums, Estadio Akron home of Club Chivas and Estadio Universitario home of Pumas UNAM. There will be eight teams that will be divided into two groups, group A with the following teams, Club America, Pumas, Toluca, and Cruz Azul and in the group, B will be Club Chivas, Atlas, Mazatlan and lastly with Tigres.

@TUDNMEX confirmed the dates of the tournament on Twitter.

The tournament will have various changes as the teams will have unlimited substitutions, as well as water, break the first 25 minutes of each half to aid the players who were out of competition for a good three months. As the tournament will hold 15 games in the two different stadiums the first game will take place with Tigres facing the newest team to the league Mazatlan FC at the Estadio Akron.

Once the group stage is complete the playoff games will shift to one single stadium, Estadio Universitario which will take place on Wednesday the15th and Thursday the 16th of July and finally have the final on the 19th. Most importantly in the playoff games, if the games end in a draw, it will straight go to a penalty shoot-out to define the winner of the match. With more than 100 days without intense activity it is no saying which team could be the favorite to win the “Copa Por Mexico”, but as most of us can say a Chivas versus America final could be the perfect final of the tournament.

So Liga MX fans we are close than ever for some soccer action!!
