Club América, the most decorated team in Mexico, has spent the past year away from its home, the Estadio Azteca, while major renovations take place in preparation for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Away from the place they call home, fans have temporarily settled at the Estadio Ciudad de los Deportes, the home of city rivals Cruz Azul.
Whilst it has taken some getting used to, Las Águilas managed to find their feet and lift their most recent title, Liga MX Apertura 2024, in the stadium of their rivals.
Now, América is looking ahead. Their permanent home is set to reopen, and the club is looking to welcome it in style.
Last week, it was announced that the national team would return with a friendly against Cristiano Ronaldo and his Portugal teammates in March 2026, and Club América are aiming to go one better.
Several reports indicate that Club América are looking to host Real Madrid at the Estadio Azteca, as a way to officially celebrate their return to the iconic stadium.
Other potential opponents include Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain, focusing on a major European talent as the perfect way to welcome the return of one of the biggest and most historic stadiums in world football.
