Club América announced the signing of 31-year-old José Raúl Zúñiga from Tijuana.
"La Pantera", as nicknamed, didn't make his professional debut until he was 25, but quickly rose through the ranks at a later age than most.
In the first three years of his career, the Colombian forward played in the Liga de Expansión, with Potros UAEM and Dorados de Sinaloa, before getting a move to the Liga MX with Querétaro.
During the 2023/24 season with Los Gallos, Zúñiga netted eight goals in 29 appearances, but moved north to join Los Xolos at the end of the season.
Under fellow Colombian, Jose Carlos Osorio, Zúñiga and Tijuana were a perfect match. Together, they finished seventh for the Apertura as the striker contributed with eight goals. Whilst Los Xolos fell to 13th in the Clausura, Zúñiga scored 12 of the side's 29 goals.
La Pantera to join Las Águilas
Club América failed to win the Liga MX Clausura after three consecutive titles.
Reflecting on their finals defeat to Toluca, the club decided it was time to bring in a new striker. In the Clausura regular season, América scored 34 goals, seven fewer than Toluca.
With Rodrigo Aguirre being their main source for goals, André Jardine began the search for a new forward to boost their chances in front of goal.
The signing of Zúñiga suggests that either Henry Martín or Víctor Dávila could become surplus to requirements as Las Águilas utilise a one-striker formation.
Details of the Zúñiga move
What we know right now is that Zúñiga joins Club América on a three-year contract, taking him until 2028.
