The opening matchday of the Concacaf W Champions Cup delivered goals, surprises, and clear contrasts across the groups.

This year's tournament favorites wasted no time stamping their authority, showing their offensive power and determination to fight for the title. At the same time, some clubs managed to resist against the odds, standing out with their defensive organization and fighting spirit.

These first matches highlighted the gap between regional powerhouses and developing clubs, but also confirmed that there is no room for complacency in this competition. Pachuca and Washington Spirit were the stars of the week with overwhelming wins, while América struggled in a goalless draw against Alajuelense. Gotham FC, meanwhile, battled to a valuable win against Monterrey.

With these results, the tournament is already shaping up to reveal the teams that could rise as contenders, and those that must quickly adjust if they hope to stay alive. Every point is crucial in such a short and demanding group stage.

As the format is split into two groups of five teams, each round sees one side sitting out. In the opening round, Orlando Pride (Group A) and Vancouver Whitecaps FC Girls Elite (Group B) had no fixture, giving them the chance to put their feet up.

Group A

Pachuca 6-0 Chorillo

Pachuca made a statement in their debut, thrashing Panama’s Chorillo 6-0 in a match that was one-sided from the start. Jocelyn Orejel opened the scoring in the 19th minute, and just three minutes later, Natalia Mauleón doubled the lead, putting the Mexican side firmly in control before halftime.

The second half was all about extending their dominance, with goals from Marcia García (52’), Chinwendu Ihezuo (68’), and a late brace from Nina Nicosia (83’ and 86’). Five different scorers highlighted Pachuca’s offensive depth and versatility.

The stats told the story: Pachuca had 31 total shots, 12 corner kicks, and no bookings, while Chorillo only managed a single attempt and failed to win a single corner. This emphatic win places Pachuca among the early favorites for the competition.

Alajuelense 0-0 Club América

The clash between Alajuelense and Club América ended goalless, though it was far from dull. América dominated possession and created countless chances, but Alajuelense stood firm with a disciplined and resilient defensive display.

The Costa Rican side only managed six shots throughout the game, while América fired 26 attempts, many of them dangerously close to breaking the deadlock. However, América lacked finishing precision and were thwarted several times.

The statistics underline the difference: América had five corners to Alajuelense’s four, and committed fewer fouls, receiving only one yellow card against two for the hosts. Despite being clearly superior, América walked away frustrated, failing to capitalize on their dominance.

Group B

Alianza 0-7 Washington Spirit

Washington Spirit left no doubts about their quality with a crushing 7-0 victory over Alianza in their tournament opener. The breakthrough came early, as Rosemonde Kouassi scored in the 21st minute, followed quickly by Chloe Ricketts at the 24’. Alianza were pinned back in their own half and struggled to keep pace with the visitors’ relentless pressure.

The second half was even more punishing: Kouassi completed her hat-trick with goals in the 52nd and 59th minutes, Brittany Ratcliffe scored on the 49’, Trinity Rodman added her name to the scoresheet less than 10 minutes later as Sofía Cantore sealed the rout in the dying moments. The Spirit showcased depth, intensity, and an unstoppable attacking rhythm.

Alianza barely registered in the stats with just one shot, no corners, and no bookings. In contrast, Washington Spirit fired 27 shots and earned five corners, completely controlling the game. This performance sets them up as one of the most dangerous teams in the competition.

Gotham FC 2-1 Monterrey

In a much tighter contest, Gotham FC secured a 2-1 victory over Monterrey in New Jersey. The hosts started strong, with Bruninha opening the score in the 6th minute after a defensive lapse from Rayadas. Khyah Harper doubled the lead at the 24’ with a well-worked attacking move.

Monterrey refused to fold and hit back at the 32’ through Marcela Restrepo, bringing the game back to life. From then on, both sides tightened defensively and sought spaces cautiously. The Mexican side pushed for an equalizer but lacked sharpness in the final third.

Statistically, Gotham showed superiority with 15 shots compared to Monterrey’s six and six corners to just one. Rayadas fought hard, but Gotham’s early lead proved decisive. The win positions Gotham strongly in the group, while Monterrey will need to recover quickly to stay in contention.

The opening round of the Concacaf W Champions Cup lived up to expectations, bringing goals, intensity, and different narratives across the groups. Mexican clubs showed mixed fortunes: Pachuca shined with a dominant display, América stumbled despite superiority, and Monterrey fought hard but fell short against a solid Gotham side.

Meanwhile, Washington Spirit sent a powerful warning with their resounding 7-0 win, setting themselves apart as a top favorite. The gaps in competitive levels were evident, but each match added lessons and excitement to the tournament’s story. This is just the beginning, and the road ahead promises plenty more drama.

Can the underdogs of the region pull off surprises against the heavyweights, or will the favorites maintain their dominance from start to finish?
