Chivas Set to Make Bold $7 Million Bid for Monterrey's Midfield Maestro
By Sam Plummer
The news broke from MARCA that Chivas spent the weekend preparing a bid for 27-year-old Jordi Cortizo.
The midfielder has been selected to represent Mexico at this summer's Copa America, so if any move is to be announced, it is expected that it will do so after Mexico's involvement in the competition.
The playmaker played over 800 minutes for Monterrey during the Clausura and was involved in 37 shots on goal during that time. Numbers that will intrigue Chivas fans as their side scored the second least goals from any of the top eight sides in the Clausura, netting 27 times from 17 games. Worrying figures despite reaching the semi final, but Cortizo could be the man to fix those problems.
As goals alluded Los Rojiblancos throughout the second half of the season, Cortizo also provided the second-highest assists for Monterrey.
In search of a creative outlet, it is reported that Chivas are willing to pay in the region of $7 million as they look to bolster their attacking options for the upcoming Apertura campaign.
Whilst Chivas remain favourites for the signature of the Mexican international, reports suggest that Cruz Azul are also interested in the Monterrey man. The Mexico City side already confirmed the signing of Atlanta United striker Giōrgos Giakoumakīs and are expected to add a playmaker to their summer signings. However, the MARCA article also draws attention to Tigres midfielder Sebastián Córdova, who Azul remain interested in.
Cortizo has experience playing around the league, where before his move to Monterrey, he also played for Querétaro, Tijuana and Puebla.
