The women's team of Monterrey ousted their Club América competition according to SofaScore.
It came down to penalty kicks for the end to come. The score was 2-2 in aggregate goals. They got there with a first game score of 1-0 won by Club América and a game two score of 2-1 won by Monterrey.
Immediately following the second game they would move on to play thirty minutes of scoreless extra time for the aggregate match. That proved useless. So after no more goals were scored a new set of rules began: penalty kicks. Each team would take five shots and the best total would win.
The penalty kicks had makes and misses. Each miss would take a shot but they would not all make it. Seriously though, most of the shots went in.
Monterrey would score four times this way. Their penalty makes were from Franco, Bernal, Dongen and Campo. Their only failed shootout shot was from the boot of Martínez.
Club América would also receive five attempts. Their makes were from Rodriguez, Palacios and Pereira. But they had two missed shots; both Luna and Avilez of Club América missed their penalty shots.
That would be enough to break the tie. No more opportunities were required and no more chances were given.
Though Monterrey finished third in the Clausura (and fourth in the Apertura) they became champions. Club América would have to settle for runners up. Club América finished fourth in the Clausura (and second in the Apertura). This was a wild tournament this year.
