Puebla 1 vs 2 Monterrey
Puebla's return to Liga MX action saw them aim for a first win of any kind since the opening day of the season, where they scored a last-minute penalty to beat Santos Laguna. Monterrey were under new management for this game with Argentine Martín Demichelis making his debut at the helm of Los Rayados.
The game started in the perfect manner for Demichelis as German Berterame opened the scoring for the visitors after the half-hour mark. Fans got their first taste of new signing Óliver Torres in the starting line-up and he was able to connect with fellow Spaniard Sergio Canales to score the second goal. Santiago Ormeno gave Puebla a lifeline late in the second half, but it was too late as the visitors returned to the north with a fourth victory in five Liga MX matches.
Sunday 18th August 2024
Tijuana 3 vs 1 Santos Laguna
Atlético de San Luís 4 vs 0 Querétaro
Los Xolos returned to Liga MX action in search of a third win in five opening matches, following a perfect start in their first two games. Santos started the campaign with three losses from four and saw the visit to Tijuana as an opportunity to grab a first win of the season.
The first twist of the game came after 15 minutes when the visitors took the lead through Anthony Lozano. However, their lead would only last another 15 minutes when Efrain Alvarez scored his first goal of the season to level the score. The comeback was complete late into the first half as Jose Zuniga was able to give Los Xolos the lead for the first time in the game. Things went from bad to worse for Santos when they were reduced to 10-men in the 50th minute as Santiago Nunez was given a straight red card. Tijuana would not make them pay until the 98th minute when 15-year-old Gilberto Nora became the 3rd youngest player in Liga MX history and managed to assist Jaime Alvarez to secure all three points.
Last but not least, San Luís faced a struggling Querétaro side that had lost all of its opening four league games before the Leagues Cup break. Fortunes were not to change during their visit to the Estadio Alfonso Lastras Ramírez, especially as they were 2-0 down at the halftime break. Goals from Luis Najera and Sebastien Lamonge gave the home side the advantage before another two in the second half through Léo and Franck Boli, who came off the bench to score his third goal of the Liga MX season. Attempts to restore any type of positivity were crushed in the second half when Jose Maria Canale received a second yellow card, meaning that the defender will miss their next game against high-flying Cruz Azul.
