River Plate has opened negotiations with Monterrey’s attacking midfielder Maximiliano Meza. According to renowned journalist César Luis Merlo, the Argentine club has made a formal offer to Los Rayados, aiming to secure Meza’s services before his contract expires at the end of the year.

Maximiliano Meza’s journey began at Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata, where he debuted in 2012. His performances caught the eye of Independiente, and he made the switch in 2016. At Independiente, Meza flourished, notably contributing to their 2017 Copa Sudamericana triumph.

In 2018, Monterrey recognized his talent and brought him to Liga MX. Over seven seasons with Los Rayados, Meza established himself as a key player, winning two CONCACAF Champions League titles, a Liga MX Apertura, a Copa MX, and a Copa Sudamericana with Independiente.

Maximiliano Meza is known for his versatility and creativity on the pitch. Primarily an attacking midfielder, he is adept at playing on the wings or even as a forward when required. Meza combines technical skill with a high work rate, making him a valuable asset both offensively and defensively. His dribbling, vision, and ability to pick out key passes have been instrumental in breaking down stubborn defences.

Throughout his career, Meza has amassed an impressive collection of trophies:

  • 2 CONCACAF Champions League titles with Monterrey (2019, 2021)
  • Liga MX Apertura with Monterrey (2019)
  • Copa MX with Monterrey (2019-2020)
  • Copa Sudamericana with Independiente (2017)

Despite his accolades, Meza's current season with Monterrey has been underwhelming. He has only played the full 90 minutes in one of their opening four games, struggling to make a significant impact. This dip in form might be a contributing factor to his potential departure from Monterrey.

As negotiations progress, River Plate fans will be eager to see if Meza can bring his experience and winning mentality to their squad. With his contract nearing its end, Monterrey might be inclined to accept River’s offer rather than lose him for free. For Meza, a move to River Plate could be a chance to reignite his career and add more silverware to his already impressive collection.
