In a few short years promotions may be back in Liga MX; and oh would it be a sweet rivalry if Morelia could play Mazatlán.

"[Morelia] has started the paperwork with the Mexican football federation and Liga MX to change the site to Mazatlan, Sinaloa."

A club statement

As per, ESPN Monarcas Morelia announced a move to Mazatlán back in June 2020. The move was subsequently completed. The new team in Mazatlán would compete in the Liga MX premier division. It was initially rumored that the Mazatlán team could takeover Morelia, Puebla or Querétaro.

"For the first time in history, top flight football will come to Mazatlan, one of the most important ports in Latin America, with an innovative project that will look to impulse the untiring spirit of sinaloenses."

There would come to be a twist. Monarcas Morelia would not cease to exist entirely. Instead, they would continue on as a separate team from the new Mazatlán soccer franchise. The Monarcas would go on to compete in Liga MX de Expansión at that point.

From there on it has been a struggle. Morelia is eyeing a return to the Liga MX with this squad, but they have been playing in the Liga MX de Expansión ever since the split.

Getting back in Liga MX would require a lot. There is no promotion to Liga MX until at least the 2026 Apertura. All of a sudden that season is only two years away. However, there has been no official public decision on whether the Liga MX promotion and relegation system will return then.
