Pumas have reportedly expressed an interest in Cameroonian international Vincent Aboubakar, in an effort to end their search for a striker.
In the prior months, Pumas have been linked with the likes of Kelechi Ihenacho, Andrea Belotti and Cristian Pavón. Recent stories even suggest that the club tried to convince former Borussia Dortmund and Sevilla forward Paco Alcácer, who is set to announce his retirement from the game.
The club has maintained its stance on signing a high-profile name who boosts European experience. Since Rogelio Funes Mori's switch to León, the club has been low on attacking outlets, relying on Guillermo Martínez to lead the line for the start of the season.
Last month, Pumas announced the signing of JJ Macías, a gamble worth taking to add depth to their attacking options, but now they are looking for a player to go straight into the starting lineup, to make them a threat for the Apertura.
So far, Pumas have managed just seven goals in seven matches — a tally well below that of their playoff rivals. Monterrey, Club América, and Cruz Azul have each scored nearly twice as many as Los Universitarios.
Who is Vincent Aboubakar?
Vincent Aboubakar, 33, is a veteran striker with 15 years of experience playing in a top-flight European league.
Starting his European journey in the French Ligue 1 with Valenciennes, he soon switched to Lorient, where 16 goals in 35 games during the 2013-14 season were enough to earn a move to Portuguese giants FC Porto.
By the end of the 2010s, Aboubakar went back and forth between Los Dragaos and Turkish side Besiktas, as he represented both clubs at the highest stage.
By 2021, he briefly left Europe for a spell with Al-Nassr but returned to the Turkish side 18 months later, netting 13 goals across two seasons.
On the international stage, Aboubakar has won the colours of Cameroon at three FIFA World Cups and will be most remembered for an audacious chip against Serbia in the most recent showpiece event.
Domestically, the Cameroonian spent the last season with Hatayspor, in the Turkish Super League but has since left the club, now searching for a new employer.
Aboubakar to Pumas?
Pumas' attempts to sign an experienced striker grow stronger with every passing day, and the current rumours suggest that Aboubakar is the next on that list.
365Scores Mexico shared that Pumas are willing to offer the former Porto and Besiktas striker a one-year deal and await his response.
