Monterrey parted ways with manager Martín Demichelis after the club were unable to reach the final four of the Clausura.
Suffering a second leg loss to league leaders Toluca, those in charge opted to go in a different direction with one month before the start of the FIFA Club World Cup.
Demichelis joined the club last September, replacing Fernando Ortiz, who was dismissed after Monterrey failed to go beyond the Group Stages of the Leagues Cup.
His nine months at the helm saw Los Rayados reach a first Liga MX final since 2019, where they lost to Club América. On the continental stage, the club could only reach the quarter-final before falling short against the Vancouver Whitecaps, despite the acquisition of Sergio Ramos.
Now, the club are weighing up its options with a big summer ahead. Multiple reports suggest there are two frontrunners to take over from the former Bayern Munich and Manchester City defender.
The first name on their list was Matías Almeyda, the last manager to bring silverware to Chivas by lifting the 2017 Clausura and Copa Liga MX before winning the 2018 Concacaf Champions Cup. Since his 139 games in Guadalajara, Almeyda spent three years with the San Jose Earthquakes and this week left his post with Greek giants AEK Athens, where he won the Greek Super League and Greek Cup.
One thing that may stop Almeyda from moving to Monterrey is his allegiances to Chivas. Los Rojiblancos are also in the market for a new commander-in-chief and could be tempted themselves to bring the old band back together.
And that brings us onto Monterrey's next target: Domènec Torrent. Coming off a campaign with San Luis, Torrent guided the club to a stellar semi-final Apertura before a vastly different Clausura, that saw the side finish 15th.
Torrent spent ten years as the assistant to Pep Guardiola, and has worked with some of the best in the business during his time at Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Manchester City. Having spent time with Demichelis in the past, the 62-year-old has been tipped to take over from his former defender.
Since leaving Guardiola's right-hand side in 2018, Torrent has been the manager of New York City, Flamengo, Galatasaray and San Luis. After three La Liga titles, three Bundesliga's and a Premier League, a piece of silverware as his own standalone manager still eludes him.
Breaking news in the last few hours is that Torrent is in 'advanced talks' to become the new head coach of Monterrey and could face his former colleague Guardiola if Los Rayados can survive a group with UEFA Champions League finalists Inter Milan, River Plate and Japanese side Urawa Reds.
Who will become the next Monterrey manager? Let us know!
