Last night in the first leg of the CONCACAF Champions Cup Round of 16 between the Philadelphia Union and Club América, Luis Malagón suffered an injury on his own when attempting to kick the ball away.

The Mexican goalkeeper went down in pain after what appears to be him twisting his ankle. Malagón had to be taken off the pitch and many assumed that the injury is serious.

With three months left until the 2026 World Cup, Malagón's aspirations to play in the tournament with the Mexican national team this summer has reduced massively.

After 22 hours, Club América published an official statement on their social media pages that reveals that Malagón has a rupture of the Achilles tendon.

Club America: "Club América reports that the medical tests performed on Luis Ángel Malagón show a rupture of the Achilles tendon. Our goalkeeper will undergo surgical treatment. The recovery time will be determined by his progress."

Will Luis Malagón miss the 2026 World Cup for Mexico?

Club América did not give an exact recovery time period for Luis Malagón but similar injuries take months for players to fully recover.

Malagón is likely to be ruled out for the 2026 World Cup and lose his spot in the Mexican national team roster.

These injuries tend to take around 4 to 12 months for players to fully recover but it also depends on how quickly he recovers.

Malagón was part of the Mexican national team under Javier Aguirre but has lately been benched for Tala Rangel ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Mexican Fans believe that this latest injury opens the doors for the return of Guillermo Ochoa, who is rumored to be called-up for the Mexican national team for the friendly matches against Portugal and Belgium this month.
