Javier "Chicharito" Hernández, 37, announced that he will likely leave Chivas for a second time in his career at the end of the Liga MX Apertura.

Fifteen years after he switched Guadalajara for Manchester, Hernández is going through the twlight years of his career and has hinted at a move to the English Championship when the transfer window reopens in January 2026.

As one of the best Mexican players of his generation, Chicharito remains the country's all-time leading top goalscorer, scoring 53 goals in 112 appearances.

At a domestic level, the striker boasts an illustrious resumé. After four full seasons with Manchester United, Chicharito spent the 2014-15 campaign with Real Madrid before going on to represent Bayer Leverkusen, West Ham United and Sevilla.

The two-time Premier League winner's ten years in Europe came to an end in 2020 when he switched Spain for the United States to sign for LA Galaxy at the age of 32, before making an emotional return to his boyhood club in January 2024.

Since his return to Chivas, consistent minutes have been scarce, with just one appearance in the club's opening six matches at the start of the current Apertura campaign. As such, the Mexican legend is considering his options, feeling capable of continuing at a high level.

With his departure looking more and more inevitable, reports are starting to suggest that Chicharito is open to a move to the English Championship. He had his best moments in England, between Manchester United and West Ham, and is hoping to recreate that form in the second division.

Where might Chicharito go?

The English Championship is among the most thrilling and unpredictable leagues in world football. It brings together a unique mix of seasoned Premier League veterans stepping down a tier and bold young talents rising from the third division, eager to make their mark.

It is a league stacked with exciting talent, with sides like Leicester City, Ipswich Town and Burnley all looking for an immediate return to the Premier League. However, they have spent significantly in the summer to be well-equipped to challenge for promotion.

Outside of the league's strongest sides, Birmingham City and Wrexham are two of the league's new-boys, having earned promotion from the Football League One and with high-profile ownership, may have the financial strength and marketing power ability to convince Chicharito that they are the right choices for him.

Another possible destination for Hernández could be Swansea City. Recently boosted by investment from Real Madrid legend Luka Modrić, the Swans have struggled in front of goal despite holding a place in the top half of the table. A move in January could tempt them to bring in the Mexican striker, and with Swansea arguably showing greater ambition than Birmingham or Wrexham, it might prove to be an especially exciting option for him.
