Matchday 8 of the Liga MX Apertura took place this past weekend and it was one to remember as Chivas recorded a historic win in Mexico City.
At the Estadio Corregidora, Monterrey made it seven straight victories as Cruz Azul climbed to second with a narrow win against Jaime Lozano's Pachuca.
Friday 12nd September 2025
Necaxa 1-1 Juárez
Los Rayos dominated in Aguascalientes but could only secure a point against Juárez with the visitors taking the lead within the opening three minutes. Chasing the game, Necaxa knocked on the door with 16 shots throughout the game but their only goal came twenty minutes before the end through Tomas Badaloni.
Mazatlán 1-4 Pumas
Pumas continued their winning streak from before the international break with four goals in Sinaloa. Guillermo Martínez had a double by half-time but the hosts gave themselves a lifeline as Fabio Gomes halved the deficit by half-time. Mazatlán had the chance to level the scoring on the hour mark but Nicólas Benedetti failed to convert as two stoppage time goals from Alan Medina, and a first competitive goal for José Macías since signing for the club, after a year on the sidelines through injury.
Saturday 13rd September 2025
Pachuca 0-1 Cruz Azul
Pachuca and Cruz Azul shared three red cards in a tense, undisciplined display as Gabriel Fernández's spot kick was the difference between the two sides.
Atlas 2-2 Santos Laguna
The meeting in Guadalajara went off like a house on fire as the two sides shared three goals in opening seven minutes, but fans would have to wait until the 91st minute for another goal as Jesús Ocejo left it late to salvage a point for the visitors.
Tigres 0-0 León
Tigres and León had all the ingredients to be an exciting affair, but a goalless draw leaves Los Universitarios falling to fifth whilst León drop to tenth, hanging onto a place in the Liguilla play-in positions.
Toluca 3-1 Puebla
The reigning champions made it two wins in a row by putting three past Puebla, but the game took its time to come to life, with three goals coming in the final ten minutes of the game. Loss at the Estadio Nemesio Diez leaves Puebla with one point from eight and at the bottom of the league, whilst Los Rojos Diablos keep pace at the top, a point behind Club América in fourth.
Club América 1-2 Chivas
Chivas shocked the country by winning the 262nd Clásico Nacional. The biggest rivalry in Mexico needed 69 minutes to find an opening goal as Roberto Alvarado was on hand to tap into an empty net before Armando González went on a solo run to double the lead for Los Rojiblancos. América had time to find a late consolation goal through Alex Zendejas but it was too late as André Jardine's side suffer a first league defeat of the Apertura.
Sunday 14th September
Querétaro 0-1 Monterrey
Los Rayados maintained their place at the top of the league as German Berterame scored the game's only goal. Winning seven games from eight, Monterrey continue to go from strength to strength and will be able to add former Manchester United forward Anthony Martial to their squad for next week's top-of-the-table clash with Club América.
San Luis 1-1 Tijuana
The final game of the week saw San Luis and Tijuana share the honours as Benjamin Galdames handed the home side the lead before 16-year-old Gilberto Mora recorded a seventh goal contribution of the season as his corner met the head of Jackson Porozo to bring the sides back level.
