Toluca and Club América are our 2025 Liga MX Clausura finalists, with only one of them able to take all of the glory.
The final will see the number one seed, Los Rojos Diablos, take on a Club América side which finished the regular season in second.
Toluca
By finishing higher in the league, Toluca will have the advantage in the final as they will be crowned champions, as long as they avoid defeat over the two legs.
Toluca is managed by Antonio Mohamed, who joined the club in January with the clear aim of ending this 15-year drought without a title. Mohamed, 55, is a three-time Liga MX champion, even taking América to the top of Mexican football when they lifted the 2014 Liga MX Apertura. Amongst his achievements is his first Liga MX title, which he won remarkably with Tijuana, handing them their first and only title.
The season started with disappointment for Toluca who ended the Apertura regularl season in second, but crashed out of the playoffs at the first hurdle with a quarter final loss to Club América with back-to-back two-nil losses.
Liga MX Clausura: Regular season record
League Position | Wins | Draws | Loss | Goals For | Goals Against | Points | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Toluca | 1st | 11 | 4 | 2 | 41 | 22 | 37 |
Under Mohamed, Toluca have become a force. Things started slowly, picking up one one from their opening four games but just one defeat across the last ten games took them to the top of the table.
Scoring 41 goals across 17 games, no other side hit the back of the net more than Toluca with Alexis Vega provided 24 goal contributions whilst their $10 million signing Paulinho took the club well on their way with 14 goals.
One thing that will be of concern for the Estado de Mexico club is their recent record against Las Águilas, who have dominated recent history. Beyond the quarter-final double header last year, América ran riot when the sides met back in March.
Can Antonio Mohamed get one over on his former side and bring unbridled joy to his new club?
Club América
Club América may come into this final as the lower seeded side, but their recent dominance within Mexican football makes them clear favourites to continue their history-making run.
Since the 2024 Apertura, América have claimed every Liga MX title, defeating Tigres, Cruz Azul and Monterrey in the final. Now chasing a fourth straight league title, Las Águilas have found a way to keep themselves in the hunt and have the chance to defeat another Mexican side to become champions for a 17th time.
Liga MX Clausura: Regular season record
League Position | Wins | Draws | Loss | Goals For | Goals Against | Points | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Club América | 2nd | 10 | 4 | 3 | 34 | 10 | 34 |
Only three points was the difference between our two finalists in the regular season with América recording the best defensive record of any team.
Conceding more than half the number of Toluca, André Jardine's side have played a crucial role in getting them to another final, whilst conceding only one goal across their four playoff games in the Clausura.
They're not bad going forward either, three players (Alex Zendejas, Álvaro Fidalgo and Víctor Dasilva) all netted seven times during the regular season. Even when the sides met in the capital earlier this year, the earlier two added their names to the scoresheet before Cristian Broja added a 96th-minute winner. Whilst Toluca have one main talisman in Paulinho, América have strength in numbers.
