Breaking news: Mexico will face Argentina in June 2026 as a prelude to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The news comes after the FMF (Federación Mexicana de Fútbol) announced friendlies against Portugal and France in an attempt to face some of the strongest nations in the world ahead of the tournament.
With less than 12 months before the competition gets underway, the infamous Estadio Azteca (Mexico City) is set to become the first stadium in the world to host three opening matches of a World Cup (having done so in 1970 & 1986).
As anticipation gears up, the world will be watching as Mexico, the United States, and Canada come together to host the biggest competition in football, and all three nations will be aiming to make a major impact.
For El Trí, they have already announced some star-studded opponents in preparation, but this latest news could be the biggest of them all.
Earlier today, Argentine journalist Gastón Edul reported that Argentina are in discussions to play a Concacaf double-header against Mexico and Honduras, though the venues for the matches have yet to be decided.

Mexico have played many of their recent fixtures north of the border, in the United States. Earlier this month, Javier Aguirre and his men were in Oakland, California, for a goalless draw against Japan before heading to Nashville to meet South Korea at the Geodis Park in Nashville, Tennessee.
However, with the Estadio Azteca set to open in March 2026, there is an outside possibility that Mexico City could be an option to host a historic fixture, which could include seven-time Ballon d'Or winner Lionel Messi.
Argentina, the reigning World Cup champions, seem destined to put up a tough fight in attempts to retain the title, but will face stiff competition from the likes of France and Spain, to name a few.
Lionel Scaloni’s squad boasts quality across every position. Emiliano Martínez, a two-time FIFA Best Goalkeeper award winner, has established himself as an essential member of the team, playing a decisive role in Argentina’s 2022 World Cup triumph. In defence, Cristian Romero has developed into a commanding and reliable presence at the back, while in midfield, Liverpool’s Alexis Mac Allister has earned widespread acclaim, most recently helping the Reds secure the 2025 Premier League title.
Among the standout names is Lionel Messi who, even at 38, continues to demonstrate his influence on the pitch. Argentina can also call upon two of the world’s leading strikers in Lautaro Martínez and Julián Álvarez. In addition, rising talents may feature, including Real Madrid’s latest signing, Franco Mastantuono, a teenager widely regarded as having a bright future with the Spanish giants.
The last time Mexico and Argentina met was in the 2022 World Cup, in the group stages, where the South American side managed to come out 2-0 victors, as Messi and Enzo Fernández made the difference.
A win which would kickstart their road to glory, having lost their opening game of the tournament against Saudi Arabia.
