Mexico were held in Guadalajara to a 1-1 draw with Ecuador after suffering a heavy defeat to Colombia at the weekend.

As FIFA World Cup preparations intensify, Mexico faced two of South America's best performing sides from their qualifying campaigns and were left humbled after a toothless display against Colombia, losing 4-0 in Texas.

Manager Javier Aguirre made widespread changes for the meeting with Ecuador, as César Montes, Johan Vásquez, and Erik Lira were the only players to retain their places following the loss to Colombia.

Notable changes saw Chivas' José Rangel start in goal, replacing Luís Malagón whilst there were first starts for Mateo Chavez and Monterrey's German Berterame, who was accompanied by Hirving Lozano and Julián Quiñones in attack.

Mexico got up and running in the first three minutes with Berterame getting his first international goal by getting onto the end of an Erik Sanchez pass to slot beyond the Ecuador keeper.

The lead only lasted for 17 minutes after a poorly weighted pass from Luis Romo fell to Pachuca's Enner Valencia, but as the Ecuadorian forward went to shoot, he was brought to the ground by an on-rushing Rangel. Leaving the referee no choice but to award a penalty, Jordy Macías stepped up to calmly slot his effort beyond Rangel to level the game.

Chances continued for the visitors as Ecuador continued to search for a go-ahead goal but John Zamora, Valencia and Macías all failed to get past Rangel.

Mexico's best chance fell to Toluca's Marcel Ruiz who made a darting run into the box but the subsequent shot failed to test Ecuador's Hernán Galindez.

The result leaves a slightly sweeter taste in the mouthes of Mexican football fans, knowing that they can hold their own against South America's finest, despite the catastrophe against Colombia. Injuries and the FIFA U-20 World Cup played a part with key figures missing from the October squad, but the november meetings with Uuruguay and Paraguay will continue to test the squad as they prepare for next summer's World Cup.
