FootyStats shows us the 22 teams and how they are competing this time in the CONCACAF Champions League.
Teams from Liga MX take on other clubs from across North America and Central America. Per Wikipedia, "Its 41 member associations represent countries and territories mainly in North America, including the Caribbean and Central America, and, for geopolitical reasons, three nations from the Guianas subregion of South America—Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana (an overseas region of France)." About half of the 41 will represent those leagues with the best 22 being participants.
Real Estelí, Toluca, Monterrey, Guadalajara, Vancouver Whitecaps, Tigres UANL, Moca, Nashville SC, Cavalier, Cavalry FC, Forge FC, CA Independiente de La Chorrera, Herediano, FC Cincinnati, Comunicaciones, Houston Dynamo, Deportivo Saprissa, América, Orlando City, Philadelphia Union, New England Revolution and St. Louis City are in the first round. Winners will join the clubs: Columbus Crew, Pachuca, Inter Miami CF, Alajuelense and Robinhood.
The first round is underway. Opening results are in. Five matches have been played. Each match in the first round is split into two legs. Each leg is a full game and ties are determined immediately following game two.
Monterrey notched a 4-1 victory in game one to lead their two leg set. América lost but did manage to put a late one in to pull to 1-2 against Real Estelí. Toluca beat Herediano 2-1, a match that saw Toluca acquire a red card before any scoring began. Guadalajara beat Forge 3-1 in their leg. Tigres pulled out a tie against Canadian league entree Vancouver.
Leg one continues next week. Matches will occur Tuesday February 20 through Thursday February 22 to wrap up the first games. The second games will occur simultaneously with game ones, as they are spread out this month. Those will continue Tuesday February 13 and finish at the end of the month. Who will advance? Who will take the trophy?
