The curtain opener for this stage of the Leagues Cup will see Pumas travel to Seattle. The Liga MX club managed to secure their first win of the competition in the former round against Vancouver. Tuesday 16th August 2024
Cruz Azul vs Mazatlán
Tigres vs NYC FC
Toluca vs Colorado Rapids
Club América vs St. Louis City SC
Cruz Azul and Mazatlán begin the Tuesday night antics at the Audi Field in Washington City. A familiar field for Mazatlán, who managed to beat DC United 2-1 in the U.S. capital whilst Cruz Azul managed to defeat Orlando City via a penalty shootout to set up this all-Liga MX affair in the round of 16.
At the same time, Tigres head to New Jersey to face NYC FC. The Monterrey side managed to overcome the Liga MX challenge of Pachuca, via a Marcelo Flores winner whilst the New York club beat the New England Revolution in a penalty shootout. Prior, they beat Querétaro via a shootout but lost their second group game 4-2 to Cincinnati.
One of the League Cup's most in-form sides Toluca will be in action on Tuesday as they face Colorado Rapids. The Mexico State club managed to get the better of Houston Dynamo in a shootout but they previously beat Sporting Kansas City and Chicago Fire in normal time to top their group. The Rapid will provide a tougher opposition as they qualified for the round of 16 by beating Juárez. Having improved for the previous round, they started the campaign with a 4-0 loss to Portland Timbers before beating León via a shootout to reach the knockout rounds.
The final game of the round includes Liga MX Clausura and Apertura reigning champions Club América. Las Águilas entered the competition at the knockout stage and edged past Atlas in San Diego. As for St Louis City, the newly formed MLS side beat the Portland Timbers 3-1, but suffered a shootout defeat in the group stage to Juárez after edging past FC Dallas in their opening game.
