Aged 17 years and 226 days, Rodrigo Arteaga made his full Pumas debut in the club's opening day visit to Santos Laguna, becoming the youngest in Liga MX history.
Pumas previously called upon Alex Padilla, but with his parent club Athletic Bilbao, recalling the 21-year-old, Efraín Juárez handed Arteaga the opportunity for the Apertura curtain opener.
Rumours indicate that Los Universitarios are in negotiations to sign former Real Madrid and PSG goalkeeper Keylor Navas, who is currently playing in Argentina with Newell’s Old Boys.
Arteaga's first Liga MX appearance ended in a 3-0 defeat to a Santos Laguna side which picked up just two wins throughout the entire Clausura campaign.
Before the young goalkeeper had a chance to settle his nerves, the home side struck first. Aldo López noticed Arteaga off his line from 35 yards out and expertly lifted the ball over him to open the scoring.
It was an unfortunate moment for the 17-year-old, who was ultimately punished after Santiago Trigos was dispossessed by López in the build-up.
The real moment to forget for Arteaga came in the second half. A poor back pass from Rubén Duarte forced the youngster towards his own goal-line, but a heavy touch invited pressure from Santos’ Ramiro Sordo. The forward won the challenge, and the ball rolled over the line to double the home side’s lead.
To put salt into the wound, Santos found themselves three to the good when Cristian Dajome went racing down on goal and had the time and space to slot his effort beyond the helpless Arteaga.
A debut to forget for the young Rodrigo Arteaga, but it's a lesson he will need to learn from fast as Pumas prepare for a first home game of the seaosn next weekened against Pachuca.
