Armando 'Hormiga' González, 22, has risen to the top of the Liga MX goalscoring charts, finding the back of the net 10 times in 15 games.

Born in Celaya, Guanajuato, the young forward rose through the Chivas academy, making his debut with Tapatío in the second division in 2020.

His rise into the first-team came under Fernando Gago in January 2024, featuring in a 1-1 draw with Santos Laguna, but it would take 18 months for Hormiga to find his rhythm at the highest level of Mexican football.

At the start of the 2025/26 season, Chivas and new-manager Gabriel Milito faced heavy pressure for a poor run of results, picking up just four points from seven games. However, fourtunes began to turn for Los Rojiblancos with an independence day Clásico de los Clásicos victory, against Club América, where Hormiga netted the important goal to seal the victory.

In the eight games prior to their visit to the capital in mid-September, Chivas have become one of the most in-form sides in the league, losing just twice. Their red-hot streak has seen the Guadalajara side jump into the automatic playoff positions, currently sitting in sixth as we come to the end of Matchday 15.

As for Hormiga, his goalscoring run only got started following that crucial decider in the Clásico. Goals against Necaxa, Pumas and Mazatlán caught national attention before this past weekend, where the Hormiga was called upon in the Clásico Tapatío, against Atlas.

Whilst their city-rivals have stumbled throughout the campaign, Chivas' form made them the heavy-favourites, but not many could have predicted the control they would have.

Two headers from Hormiga made it a resounding half-time lead, accompanying Luis Romo's goal to put Chivas three to the good. In the second-half, the 22-year-old continued his terror of the Atlas defence, making timely runs, finding perfect positions in the box and physically testing the back-line to score a historic hattrick.

His derby-day goals bring him level with Toluca’s reliable talisman, Portuguese international Paulinho, though he’s done so in a team that took half the season to even start competing for a spot in the top half of the table.

Now, many are calling on the Chivas striker to be called up to Javier Aguirre's November squad, in an attempt to challenge Raúl Jiménez and AC Milan's Santiago Giménez. Recent performances have suggested that Mexico need a wider variety of attacking options, having squad just once in their October meetings with Colombia and Ecuador.

It's been a memorable run for Chivas, but with Pachuca and Monterrey coming up before finding out their Apertura playoff's future, Armando 'Hormiga' González will need to continue his run as one of the most in-form players in the Liga MX if they have any ambitions of ending the season on a high note.
