Los Gallos Blancos put on sn impressuvr display to fight off the Aguilas constant attack and gain a solid point at home.

On Saturday night in Estadio Corregidora, Club America visited Queretaro. Much was expected from a hot America team that was riding on a three game winning streak in Liga MX, having outscored their opponents by a total of 9-1. That wasn’t pleasant news for a Queretaro team that conceded four goals to Leon the week before. Therefore, coming into this game, there was much expected from Club America to repeat the success from the previous three matches.

As the match kicked off, we saw the same strong America team that was creating opportunities and taking shots but Queretaro was prepared for this match and shut down every opportunity of attack. shut

It wasn’t until the 37th minute when 20-year old Jorge Sanchez launched a beautiful cross that found Oribe Peralta for the header to give America the 1-0 lead in the first half.

In the second half, Queretaro picked up the pace and began to attack the America defense a little more, causing problem for the America back line. It was perfectly executed soccer from the Gallos Blancos as they managed to have Miguel Sambudio stay on Diego Lainez and make him a non-factor for most of the game – though Lainez did have a few missed opportunities throughout the game.

In the middle of all the back and forth between both teams, Queretaro found the back of the net in the 75th minute. They answered by scoring an almost identical same goal as America. This time it was Keko Villalava that sent in a cross to Camilo Sanvezzo for the tie gaming header that was out of the reach of Marchesin.

In a tight game where both teams were going back and forth, it was heavily dominated by Queretaro in the stat sheet. The 4-0 embarrassment to Leon served as a learning and awakening moment for Queretaro to regroup and come back strong in this match against America. Queretaro managed to outplay America in the stat sheet as Queretaro had more shots, possession percentage, and passes completed than America did. That’s the kind of performances that can turn the season around for some teams specially when they weren’t the favorites going into the game.

As for America, this game was their opportunity to gain sole possession of second place following Pumas loss to Monterrey. If America would have won, they could have been right behind Cruz Azul in the table. The tie keeps them locked in third place, however, while Monterrey jumped over them and moved back up to second place.

This wasn’t Americas best performance in a game which they were heavy favorites. For all we know, they came into this game thinking it would be a walk at the park. It wasn’t.

This week will be interesting for America. It is double Jornada and they find themselves facing Leon on Wednesday and Pumas on Saturday. They can look to bounce back and get on the winning column by defeating a less threatening opponent in Leon before they face a big test against Pumas who are looking to get back to that number one spot.
