Oswaldo Alanis has joined Real Oviedo of Spain, ending speculation he might return to Chivas and Liga MX.

It seems that the bizarre transfer saga is finally over for former Chivas Guadalajara man, Oswaldo Alanís, as the center back has this afternoon agreed to join Real Oviedo in Spain’s Segunda División.

The announcement comes after Alanís was released from his contract at Getafe after new sporting director Nicolas Rodriguez took over at the club. Alanís had only joined the club in July signing a two-year deal to take him until the summer of 2020. However, owing to an overload of central defenders on the books at Getafe, he was quickly shown the door.

Upon being released, rumors immediately flew in from all directions about a potential return to Liga MX or even to the MLS. There was even talk of an immediate return to Guadalajara. But, despite a very public plea from Chivas’ social media team, Alanís made it clear that his desire was to stay in Europe.

As we now know, he’s opted to remain in Spain and has made the short trip North to represent the Asturian giants, Real Oviedo. A team who, like Chivas, have dealt with their own fair share of financial problems in recent years and even required a crowdfunding project to continue their existence in professional football. A project helped in no small part by former players Michu, Santi Cazorla and Juan Mata.

Now back on steady ground, Oviedo will be hoping to secure a return to the primera división after a disappointing end to the 2017/18 season saw them narrowly miss out on the promotion playoffs. In the end, they finished 7th and level on points with 6th place Numancia but behind on goal difference.

What may seem at first glance as an odd move to play second division football for a season, may actually be a great move for the defender. Oviedo have a very talented side which is more than capable of earning promotion and Alanís will be a welcome addition to their back-line. If all goes to plan, this could be a quick return ticket to top division football and a chance for Alanís to really prove Getafe wrong for letting him go.
