The Mexican National Team would like to make Ricardo Ferretti their new manager, but Tigres bosses are in no mood to let their manager leave.

Mexico’s search for a new national team manager is going to have to go on without Ricardo Ferretti. The team’s current interim boss will not be permitted to take over the job full-time.

Ferretti’s bosses at Tigres are adamant that he needs to fulfill his contract with the Liga MX club. They’ve specifically told the 64-year-old manager that he is a “soldier” at Tigres and will be required to “respect” his contract. That’s a completely reasonable stance for club officials to take.

Tigres aren’t exactly dominating the competition at the moment. They currently sit seventh in the table which is well below where they should be based on their talent level. It’s clear that club officials want to see Ferretti refocus his energies on helping move the team steadily up the league table.

The real question is how soon Ferretti can devote all of his energy to Tigres again. The Mexican federation is in the midst of an exhaustive search to find the perfect manager to lead the nation forward. Despite interviewing at least 15 candidates to date, there doesn’t seem to be an obvious hire on the horizon.

Federation president Yon de Luisa promises fans that there will be news on the search “in the coming days” but who’s to say how many days that actually means. In the meantime expect Ferretti to continue to devote a lot of time and energy to managing the national team.

At some point, that’s going to cause the patience of Tigres officials to run out. They clearly want Ferretti to stay, as evidenced by their refusal to let him leave to take the Mexico job on a permanent basis. Those feelings could change if he continues to straddle the fence between the two jobs. At some point, they’ll demand he return to Tigres on a full-time basis.

That day likely isn’t coming soon, but it’s a situation fans should keep an eye on. Tigres has been gracious thus far, but that kindness won’t last forever. Mexico needs to find a permanent coach very soon to avoid conflict with the Liga MX club.
