Tottenham are reportedly interested in FC Porto and El Tri midfield star Hector Herrera

According to several Portuguese news outlets and reported by TeamTalk.com, Tottenham have reportedly identified Hector Herrera as a target in the January transfer window. The English club shocked everyone, especially their fans, by not making a single addition in the summer transfer window but may look to make up for lost time in January.

Herrera has been at Porto since 2013 after beginning his career at Pachuca in 2011 and has grown in to quite the player for the Dragons. He is thought of quite highly at the Portuguese club, having been named the Player of the Year for the 2014-15 season and given the captain’s armband since the 2015-16 season.

All good things must come to an end and the midfielder’s contract is set to expire at the end of the season so naturally other clubs have begun to circle around to try and snatch him up while he’s still a Porto player. Porto also face the decision of whether to cash in, at least somewhat given the relatively small fee, or to see out the rest of the season with Herrera still in the squad and let him leave on a free transfer.

If they do indeed sell him for the reported fee then they will at the very least recoup the money they paid Pachuca, marking some very good business given what Hector Herrera has done at the club.

Porto have long made their ends meet by developing South and Central American talent and selling them off at much higher transfer fees,  James Rodriguez and Falcao being some recent examples. Herrera likely will not sell for anywhere near either of those superstars but he could be an important player for Tottenham were he to make the move.

Spurs have been looking for reinforcements and given their tendency to make deeps runs in multiple competitions, they will need all the help they can get. Herrera would be cup-tied in the Champions League but could of course play regularly for Spurs in the Premier League or domestic cups.

Tottenham will be facing some stiff competition for his signature according to the reports, with Barcelona, Inter Milan, Arsenal, and Roma all rumored to be interested. This of course all depending on whether or not Porto have any desire to sell in January. Their league position and Champions League prospects will likely determine that.
