Several El Tri players were involved in the 2018 UEFA Champions League Matchday Two and they experienced mixed results

The UEFA Champions League group stage is in full swing with Matchday Two wrapping up this week and several Mexican players were in action. Here is how each of those players and their respective clubs fared this week:

Hector Herrera and Jesus Corona – FC Porto:

Result: FC Porto 1-0 Galatasaray

FC Porto have the luxury of being in one of the easier groups in the Champions League this season, if such a thing even exists, being matched up with Schalke, Galatasaray, and Lokomotiv Moscow. Trips to Istanbul and Moscow are never easy but this week they welcomed the Turkish giants to Estadio do Dragao and notched a hard-earned victory.

Herrera played nearly the entire match and was brought off in the 89th minute as one of Porto’s time-wasting substitutions as they held on to a 1-0 lead. The midfielder earned a 6.6 rating from popular football scores app FotMob and had an unspectacular afternoon. It was good and not great from Hector but it was enough to see the match out for Porto.

Corona on the other hand was brought off in the 69th minute but was a spark in the Porto attack and earned himself 7.5 rating for his efforts. Porto now sit joint top of the group with Schalke after the pair shared the spoils in their opening group match.

Hirving Lozano and Erick Gutierrez – PSV Eindhoven

Result: PSV 1-2 Inter Milan

Whoever blessed FC Porto with the easy group did the exact opposite for PSV Eindhoven as they were placed in a group with Tottenham, Barcelona, and Inter Milan. PSV have had a rough go of it losing their first two matches and looking like they will prop up the table in the group stage.

Hirving Lozano was one of the bright spots for the Dutch club as he caused Inter trouble all evening cutting in from the left. One such movement earned him an assist on Pablo Rosario’s wonder goal that gave PSV a lead that last until the 60th minute. Lozano finished the day with three shots, one of which was on target, and continues to be a bright spot for PSV.

Erick Gutierrez was an unused substitute yet again as the club appears to be bringing along their new signing quite slowly.

So as you can see these El Tri stars had a mixed bag of results this week in the Champions League as is to be expected given the groups they were fortunate or unfortunate to be placed in. Check back later in the week for a report on how the stars of Mexico fare in the Europa League!
