Gustavo Matosas fired as Atletico San Luis coach
Throughout Atletico San Luis social media accounts they announced that they would part ways with Gustavo Matosas after a brief stance in San Luis.
Atletico San Luis has had a rough past few weeks on the field and off of it in the Liga MX after an embarrassing violence broke out in their stadium that caused them to not only lose the game but have a few home games behind closed doors to serve the penalty of the violence that sparked headlines around the world.
If that was not bad enough for Atletico San Luis this past weekend suffered their 7th loss in the Apertura 2019, a devastating 3-2 loss at Leon that placed San Luis in 14th position with 17 points in the league standings.
Although their losses garnered some attention, what really took the media by storm was the controversial audio released over the weekend of coach Gustavo Matosas having a conversation with his agent Fernando Pavon, negotiating a certain percentage of the transfer of the player Matias Brito during their time in Leon in 2012.
Certainly that breaks many ground rules in the FIFA Code of Ethics that could see Matosas suspended from any further events as a coach for about 2-5 years once the situation is handled by FIFA in the upcoming months. With the leaked audio causing so much tension with critics and media, Atletico San Luis took it into their own hands to solely move away from Gustavo Matosas, with the official statement saying that due to “poor results,” Matosas would no longer be part of the team.

But we all know why he was let go and although Matosas numbers with San Luis were not great (seven games in charge, winning 2 and losing 5), ownership had a perfect opportunity to get rid of him before the team also becomes the eye of the storm.
Atletico San Luis will have Luis Garcia (coach of the team’s Under-20 squad) take over for the remainder of the Apertura 2019 until they find their ideal coach for the upcoming Clausura 2020.
Overall, San Luis has been a huge disappointment in the Liga MX with managing of their coaches in the Apertura 2019, first It was Alfonso Sosa who was let go at the start of September due to accusations of offending the sexual preferences of two players in the team and now with the issues of Matosas, San Luis has built a bad rep for themselves on their own.
Hopefully the Clausura 2020 they find a way to reinvent themselves for a better identity.
