The insolvency of los Tiburones Rojos was the primary cause for their disaffiliation from the league.

Mexican Soccer Federation president Yon de Luisa made a public announcement that Veracruz has been kicked out of Mexico’s first division as well as all other Federation categories, including the Under-20, the Under-17, the Under-15 and the Liga Femenil. This action comes on the heels of yet another disastrous tournament in Liga MX for the Tiburones.

The lone high point of the Apertura 2018 season came on Oct. 29 when Veracruz ended its embarrassing 41-game winless streak that stretched back 14 months to late August 2018. The Tiburones finally won and many of the team’s long-suffering fans were on hand to see the 1-0 win at home over Puebla.

At the same time, the team was making equally bad headlines after the players announced that team owner Fidel Kuri had not been paying their salaries. Some had not been paid in six months.

Really a total mess and a headache for the Liga MX dealing with Kuri after making backlash comments towards the league and not fulfilling his duties as an owner in the league, which makes total sense on why Veracruz will be discontinued permanently.

The Liga MX will now move forward with only 18 teams for the Clausura 2020 and there will be no relegation at the end of the season. The relegation standings will continue to be calculated and the demotion of one team will take place after the 2020-2021 season.

All the Veracruz immediately become free agents and can sign with whatever team comes forward to present them with a better opportunity in their careers.

One of the biggest names that will get many phone calls will be stand out goalkeeper Sebastian Jurado who made a name for himself by making plenty of heroic saves for his home town team.

Fidel Kuri has been served official papers notifying him of the disaffiliation. It would not be a surprise if the irascible Kuri takes legal action against the Liga MX but Kuri probably knows that the result will not be favorable for him.
