Cruz Azul arrives in Qatar: FIFA Intercontinental Cup journey begins

Cruz Azul played in the 2025 Apertura semifinal against Tigres, and after a 1-1 draw over the weekend in the second leg, the aggregate score finished 2-2. Cruz Azul were eliminated from the 2025 Apertura due to the league standings.

Cruz Azul's 2025 is not over, as they will play in the 2025 Intercontinental Cup. Cruz Azul qualified for this tournament after winning the 2025 CONCACAF Champions Cup over the Vancouver Whitecaps 5-0 on June 1, 2025.

The Mexican team will be the representative of CONCACAF in the tournament, and their win secures their spot in the 2029 FIFA Club World Cup.

La Máquina arrived in Doha, Qatar, where the tournament will be held this year. Cruz Azul also trained ahead of their match this week.

Cruz Azul will be playing against the 2025 Copa Libertadores champions Flamengo on Wednesday in the second round.

The other teams in the 2025 FIFA Intercontinental Cup

There are a total of six teams participating in the 2025 Intercontinental Cup. The following teams are: Al Ahli (AFC), Auckland City FC (Oceania), Cruz Azul (Concacaf), Flamengo (CONMEBOL), Paris Saint-Germain (UEFA), and Pyramids FC (CAF).

The first round was between Pyramids FC and Auckland City FC. Pyramids FC won 3-0 and reached the second round vs Al Ahli. Pyramids FC defeated Al Ahli 3-1 and are in the semifinals (Challenger Cup).

Cruz Azul will play against Flamengo in the 'Derby of the Americas' match. The winner will advance to the semifinal or the Challenger Cup to play against Pyramids FC.

The winner of the Challenger Cup will play against PSG in the final, for the 2025 Intercontinental Cup.
