Guillermo Ochoa has been a free agent since June after leaving his former club AVS Futebol SAD in the Portuguese league. Ochoa has been pressured to find a club quickly, as Mexican National Team head coach Javier Aguirre stated that he will not call him up until he finds a new team.

After rumors of Ochoa returning to Liga MX and Spain, the Mexican goalkeeper has found a new team ahead of the 2026 World Cup. Cyprus club AEL Limassol announced the signing of Guillermo Ochoa, who will join on a one-year contract.

AEL Limassol is one of the biggest teams in Cyprus but over the last few years, they have not been the same. Among the top teams in the Cyprus league are APOEL Nicosia and Pafos FC, who will play in the Champions League this season.

The Cyprus league is the 17th-best league in Europe. The Cyprus league has just begun, and every team in the league has played at least one game. AEL Limassol have played two games in the league so far and are 6th with three points.

Their league opener was a 2-0 win over Olympiakos Nicosia, and their previous match was a 2-0 loss to AEK Larnaca.

Ochoa is expected to get minutes with the team during the 2025-26 season. Depending on his performances, Ochoa may be considered to return to the Mexican national team for the upcoming friendly matches.

If Ochoa receives a call-up for the next friendlies, the 40-year-old goalkeeper is expected to be part of the World Cup roster with Mexico.
