Leagues Cup action returned to our screens this week with the opening round of matches taking place, and it brought a mixed bag of results for Liga MX sides.

The tournament's curtain-raiser was in Montreal, with the Canadians playing host to Club León, and it was the MLS side who came out on top, thanks to a penalty shootout. However, debutant Rogelio Funes Mori scored by getting on the end of an inch-perfect cross from James Rodríguez.

Opening day results were kind to Liga MX teams with five of the six coming out on top, with Puebla being the big winners by defeating NYCFC 3-0, as Tigres put four past Houston, and Pachuca edged past San Diego.

There was a sigh of relief for Toluca, who came from two goals down to beat reigning champions Columbus Crew via penalties to earn two points.

On day two, results began to swing in favour of the MLS teams with 2023 Leagues Cup champions Inter Miami relying on a last-minute winner from Lionel Messi to beat Atlas, whilst a penalty-shootout loss for Club América saw them take home one point after the first round.

Wednesday night results saw Necaxa earn an impressive 3-1 victory over Atlanta Unitd as San Luis were humbled by the Portland Timbers 4-0.

Matchday three delivered a mixed bag of results for Liga MX sides. FC Juárez pulled off a surprise with a dominant 4-1 win over Charlotte FC, but there were also outcomes that fans will want to erase from memory.

In Seattle, the Sounders hit Cruz Azul for seven in a brutal response that seemed like payback for La Máquina’s historic 11-0 victory over the Washington-state club back in 1996, still their biggest win to date.

The night was also one to erase for Tiijuana, who despite scoring twice through 16-year-old Gilberto Mora, managed to leak five in their visit to LA Galaxy, whilst late drama in Cincinnati saw them get past Monterrey.

There was also late heartbreak in New York as the Red Bulls netted a 97th minute winner against Chivas courtesy of a low-driven free-kick from Emil Forsberg.
