Mexico beat Suriname 2-0 to make it two wins from two to earn a spot in the next round, all before playing Costa Rica in the final game of the group.
Javier Aguirre's side got the better of the Dominican Republic in the first game thanks to goals from Edson Álvarez, Raúl Jiménez and Cesar Montes.
This time around, meeting Suriname at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, the goals came from an unlikely source as Cesar Montes continued in fine goal-scoring form to make it three goals from two games.
Scoring two goals in the space of six minutes in the second half, the Lokomotiv Moscow defender was left unmarked to fire a bullet header on target for the first goal before latching onto a poor attempted clearance from Suriname to tap in the second.
Whilst chances were few and far between, Mexico will take confidence from the result, keeping a clean sheet against a side that netted three against Costa Rica in their last outing.
El Trí made four changes from the opening day win as Jorge Sánchez, Erik Lira, Orbellín Pineda, and AC Milan's Santigao Giménez made way for Johan Vásquez, Toluca's Liga MX-winning pair of Alexis Vega and Marcel Ruiz, whilst Julián Quiñones returned to the starting lineup.
Next up, Mexico face their toughest task by facing a Costa Rica side which has one its first two games of the tournament, scoring six goals in two games. The two countries will meet on Sunday, 22nd June at 8:00 PM (CST) at the Allegiant Stadium, Las Vegas, Nevada.
If Javier Aguirre's men can avoid defeat, they will go into the quarter-finals as top of the group, likely to face one of Curaçao, El Salvador or Honduras.
