Monterrey Advances to the Round of 16 at the FIFA Club World Cup

Los Rayados secured a heavy win in the final group game to stay alive.

Club de Fútbol Monterrey have qualified for the next round of the FIFA Club World Cup after a dominant 4-0 win over the Urawa Red Diamonds

With the help of Inter Milan, who beat River Plate in the other game, Monterrey's five points were enough to finish the group stages in second place.

Monterrey dominated throughout the 90 minutes against Urawa as Colombian midfielder Nelson Deossa broke the deadlock with a thunderous strike from 30 yards out before an even better strike from Jesús Corona and a brace from striker Germán Berterame to put the game out of reach.

The Liga MX side took a big step toward securing qualification with two important results in the lead-up to the final match. Starting with a 1-1 draw in their opening match against UEFA Champions League runners-up Inter Milan, which helped build confidence to earn another crucial point against the South American giants River Plate.

Under the new head coach, Domènec Torrent, the team has proudly represented Mexico and remains the only of two CONCACAF sides still alive in the competition, joining Inter Miami.

As a result of their qualification for the next round of the competition, it has been reported that Monterrey will earn a minimum of $21 million, with clubs taking home $7.5 million just for making it past the group stage.

Monterrey vs Borussia Dortmund

Monterrey will continue their Club World Cup journey against Borussia Dortmund. Coached by Niko Kovač, the Germans qualified as the top team in Group F with seven points.

They started their campaign with a goalless draw against Fluminense, before picking up their first three points in a thrilling 4-3 win over Mamelodi Sundowns, and a narrow 1-0 victory against Ulsan Hyundai to end the group stages.

The team arrives brimming with confidence, led in attack by Jobe Bellingham, who has already recorded a goal and an assist in three games and is the younger brother of Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham.

The Round of 16 for Los Rayados will take place on Tuesday, 1 July (20:00 CST) at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia.

A win against the German side will send Domènec Torrent's side through to the quarterfinals. where their potential opponents are yet to be decided.
