Monterrey bowed out of the FIFA Club World following an agonising 2-1 loss to Borussia Dortmund.

Two early goals from Guinean forward Serhou Guirassy gave the Germans a comfortable lead going into the break, but Monterrey responded fast after the break with a cultured header from Germán Berterame, who followed up on his two goals in the final group stage match against the Urawa Red Diamonds.

Monterrey put on the pressure in search of an equaliser, thinking that they had found it when Berterame had the ball in the back of the net for a second time, but the offside flag was quickly raised.

Jesús Corona came close, drawing smart saves from goalkeeper Gregor Kobel, before it looked like Sergio Ramos was destined to score his second goal of the tournament in added time.

After some clever hold-up play by Lucas Ocampos, Erick Aguirre delivered a pinpoint cross into the box, finding Ramos, whose header went agonisingly close to forcing extra time.

As the full-time whistle blew, it was heartbreak for Monterrey, who, despite their exit, will feel proud of their achievements at the competition.

Their competition started with a 1-1 draw against UEFA Champions League runners-up Inter Milan, then a goalless stalemate against Argentine giants River Plate, before destroying Urawa 4-0.

Whilst Los Rayados failed to make it to the quarter-finals, the competition showed that Mexican sides have what it takes to compete with the very best.

"Thanks to everyone who came to support us, and those cheering at home. We carried this club in our blood. This moment is for all of you who deserve to celebrate."
