Pumas are reportedly interested in signing the ex-Manchester City and Leicester City striker Kelechi Iheanacho.

After two seasons of uncertainty, representing three clubs in that time, the Nigerian international is considering an unprecedented move to Mexico.

Los Universitarios have become no strangers to big-name moves this summer, starting with the acquisition of Aaron Ramsey.

As the club continues its search for quality in other areas, reports indicate that Pumas are close to signing former Wolverhampton Wanderers and Roma goalkeeper Rui Patricio, in an effort to strengthen across the pitch.

Story of Kelechi Iheanacho

Aged 28, Iheanacho was once tipped to become the next big thing. Rising through the ranks at Manchester City, he was the understudy to the legendary Sergio Agüero before moving to Leicester City for £25 million.

During his time with The Foxes, Iheanacho struggled to establish himself as a starting player. Nonetheless, he lifted the FA Cup, Community Shield, and the EFL Championship in 2024 before heading to Sevilla at the end of his contract that same year.

In his nine appearances in Spain, the Super Eagles star failed to make an impression and was sent to Middlesbrough on loan for the remainder of the campaign.

Now returning to Spain, his future remains uncertain. Staying in Spain appears to be less of an option, with potential suitors expressing their interest.

At the top of those suitors are Pumas. A side that finished midtable last season in Mexico, looking for a new starting striker to help boost their chances of climbing the table this time around.

For Iheanacho, the move makes sense. A year out from the World Cup, which will be jointly held in the country, the former Premier League striker faces stiff competition with the national team, competing with the likes of Victor Osimhen, Victor Boniface, and Umar Sadiq.

Details of a potential shock move to Mexico remain unclear, but it's a deal that sends a clear message to the rest of the league, having already signed Aaron Ramsey, Álvaro Angulo and Pedro Vite.
