Sergio Ramos is reportedly destined for a Monterrey exit, having previously expressed his desire to remain with the club.
Reports suggest that Ramos is set to leave the club after the current Liga MX Apertura campaign, with the side competing in the Liga MX Apertura Liguilla.
Before the playoffs started, Ramos was asked about his future where he stated:
"I am very happy here and hope to have the situation resolved very soon."Sergio Ramos
The four-time UEFA Champions League winner and 2010 FIFA World Cup champion joined Monterrey in January, making 31 appearances for the club, scoring seven goals.
His main ambitions for joining the club were to help Los Rayados challenge for the Liga MX title and compete against some of the biggest names in world football at the FIFA Club World Cup.
Monterrey & Ramos - A Success?
In the 2025 Clausura, Ramos missed the playoffs through injury as his side fell in the quarter-finals to eventual champions Toluca. As for the Club World Cup, Monterrey fared better, escaping a group that featured River Plate, Inter Milan and Urawa Red Diamonds. Draws against River Plate and Inter Milan set the tone, with the Spanish legend even scoring against the Italians before helping the side to a 4-0 win against Urawa. Their run eventually came to an end against Borussia Dortmund, but they showed that they could compete at the highest level, with high hopes going into the Apertura.
Heading into the new season, Monterrey started with a disappointing 3-0 loss to fellow Club World Cup participants Pachuca but responded by winning their next seven league matches. By the end of the regular season, form began to dip as Los Rayados ended the season in fifth, to set up a playoff quarter-final tie with Mexico's most successful side, Club América.
In the first-tie, Monterrey took home a 2-0 win to give themselves a good chance of reaching the next round, but Ramos' future remains a mystery.
Why is Sergio Ramos leaving Monterrey?
Sergio Ramos has brought undeniable leadership and organisation to Monterrey, whilst the 39-year-old is getting older, he has shown that he has what it takes to play in Mexico.
The problem Monterrey face is that Ramos is one of the highest earning players, not only within Monterrey, but also Liga MX, earning up to $4 million per year.
At the end of December, Ramos' contract comes to an end with a big decision to be made: does he sign a new contract, or leave the club after one year?
So far, it appears that the club are not willing to renew the former Real Madrid player's contract as they look to use the value of Ramos' contract to reinvest in other areas of the pitch, possibly even looking to invest in their youth.
Reports suggest that this isn't the end for Ramos, who is determined to continue playing at the highest level. As of right now, there are no rumours regarding his next home, but a move within Mexico, or to the MLS, remains a possibility.
