Liga MX in 2025 brought us some memorable moments, historic signings and groundbreaking news as we gear up for the new year.

We started the year with Club América looking to extend their run to four consecutive league titles and rumours of legendary players eyeing up a move to Mexico, but could anybody have ever imagined we would go on to happen in the league in 2025.

As we look to turn the page onto the next chapter, plans have been put in place for some major changes to Mexican football in 2026, but what can we expect?

This is everything that happened in the Liga MX in 2025:

Toluca ended a 15 year wait to return to the top

Toluca had gone 15 years without a seat at the top of Mexican football but had been tipped for a run in the 2025 Liga MX Clausura, which is exactly what happened.

Los Rojos Diablos started the year by replacing highly-rated manager Renato Paiva with Antonio Mohamed, a man who was looking to win the Liga MX with his fourth different team, having done so with: Tijuana, Monterrey and Club América.

Pre-season predictions were matched by the end of the regular season, with Toluca sat at the top of the table. First up in the playoffs was a matchup with Monterrey, which they would turn around in the second leg, having lost the first meeting at the Estadio BBVA.

In the semi-final, the team from Mexico State returned to Monterrey, but this time facing Tigres. At 'El Volcán', Toluca fared better, earning a draw, but it was their second leg, 3-0 victory, which truly marked them as favourites heading into the final.

Earning a spot in the final, Toluca would meet a Club América side looking to win a fourth straight league title. A team that has always found its way through difficult encounters, the first leg ended goalless, with all to play for at the Estadio Nemesio Díez.

In the reverse fixture, where everything was on the line to end a horrid 15 years without a title, Toluca took control in the second half with a goal and assist from Alexis Vega, who would later win the Liga MX MVP award, to end Las Águilas' recent dominance to take Los Rojos Diablos back to the top of Mexican football.

Toluca went back-to-back

To mark this year as a truly dominant period for Toluca, they went on to two their second-straoight title, becoming the fourth team in Mexican history to become bicampeones.

Once again, the side ended the season top of the table, having the advantage going into the postseason. This time around, they would face FC Juárez and Cruz Azul in the opening rounds, two ties which would test Mohamed and his team, but they managed to come out on top, although in an unfashionable manner.

Goalless draws against Los Bravos after a narrow away win and a league position advantage to help them get past La Máquina, saw them reach the final once again, this time meeting Tigres.

The first leg encounter had Los Felinos in front, as Ángel Correa's goal was the difference. Andre-Pierre Gignac's early goal in the second leg gave Tigres a comfortable lead, but Toluca came back stronger, forcing the final to extra-time and penalties. After 16 spot kicks, up stepped a returning Vega, who had been absent for all the postseason through injury, to finally put the tie to bed and confirm Los Rojos Diablos as bichampions for the first time in the club's history.

Making it 12 Liga MX titles, the club moves second in the all-time winners list, going level with Chivas.

Historic signings

Off the pitch, 2025 was a historic year for incoming signings. Four-time UEFA Champions League winner and FIFA World Cup champion, Sergio Ramos, stole the headlines in January when he sealed a move to Monterrey, but he wasn't the only big name to join Mexican football.

In the same month, former Real Madrid teammate James Rodríguez put pen to paper for a move to Club León as Costa Rican goalkeeper Keylor Navas made a summer switch from Argentine side Newell's Old Boys to Pumas.

Navas became another name in a long list of superstars to join the Liga MX, but not many were more surprising than when Welsh international Aaron Ramsey arrived in the capital to join the same side.

The summer brought some unbelievable transfers to Mexican football, but none made global headlines more than Ángel Correa's departure from Atletico Madrid for Tigres and Allan Saint-Maximim's switch to Club América, making the Liga MX a truly international game, inlcuding some of the biggest and most successful players of recent years.

Big changes for the future

One key move that took place this year was the decision to reintroduce promotions and relegations, starting from the 2026/27 season.

The change is expected to bring stronger competition in both the Liga MX and Liga MX de Expansión. In recent campaigns, teams at the foot of the top-flight have found themselves without anything to compete for, failing to make it to the playoffs, which has led to lower attendances and a decline in quality towards the end of the regular season. In the case of the second division, teams compete at the top of the table with limited rewards up for grabs, remaining in the same league despite being named champions.

Clubs being sold?

In the last month, it has been rumoured that Grupo Salinas, has taunted with the idea of selling its clubs, Mazatlán and Puebla. The former seems to be closer to reality, with Los Cañoneros set to be sold to Emilio Escalante, the owner of Atlante.

The sale means that the Sinaloa club could be replaced regardless of their performance in the 2026 Clausura, by Atlante, leading to a long-awaited return to the top-flight after 13 years.

Rumours have linked a potential Puebla sale with José Luis Higuera and Victor Arana, those at the helm of Morelia, another side which has found great success in the second division, but has been unable to earn promotion to the top.
