Mexico will play two friendly matches this week ahead of the 2026 World Cup. The Mexican national team will consist of Mexican players who only play in Liga MX.

One of the biggest names in the squad list who was called up for the friendly matches against Panama and Bolivia is 17-year-old attacking midfielder Gilberto Mora.

Mora has already played in two of Tijuana's three matches in the 2026 Clausura so far, as he played against Club América, which finished in a 0-0 draw, and against Atlético San Luis, which finished in a 1-1 draw.

Ahead of Mexico's friendly match against Panama tomorrow, news broke that Gilberto Mora has withdrawn from Mexico’s squad due to discomfort and won't play against Panama and Bolivia.

Mexico already replaced the teenager with Club América player Alexis Gutierrez. It is unclear what type of injury Mora has, but new reports suggest that it could keep him out for months, which has Tijuana and Mexican national team fans very worried.

Gilberto Mora's Injury

According to Claro Sports, Gilberto Mora has a pubalgia injury that he has been suffering since the beginning of the 2026 Clausura, which started two weeks ago.

Mora was subbed off the pitch at halftime in Tijuana's match against San Luis over the weekend. Mora started the match, and many were concerned about his fitness.

Mora missed Tijuana's second match of the season against Querétaro. This injury could either keep him out for at least three weeks or, at most, for two months.

With the 2026 World Cup being less than five months away, Mexican fans hope that Mora could be match fit and be ready in time to prepare for the World Cup with the national team, who will have friendly matches in March, April, and potentially in May.
