Hirving "Chucky" Lozano is once again available in the free market following his departure from MLS newboys San Diego FC.
The 30-year-old switched Europe for North America last winter completing a move from Eindhoven to California, joining San Diego in their opening season as an MLS side. In doing so, he helped the team reach the playoffs with seven goals and six assists - his best return since the 2020-21 season, during his time with Napoli.
Reasons for his sudden departure are yet to be known, but one thing for certain is that Chucky will be desperate to find a new employer with the 2026 FIFA World Cup on the horizon.
Not the right fit for Chivas
As rumours begin to circulate regarding the next step in his career, Chivas were one of the first teams to be linked with the winger, but those stories were quickly squashed when it was announced that Los Rojiblancos would not enquire for the Mexican international, stating that he doesn't fit the style of Fernando Gago.
The 12-time Liga MX champions have built an exciting young and attacking squad, matched by the recent signing of Brian Guiterrez from the Chicago Fire, and believe that they are not in need of more players for that position.
Monterrey done for January signings
Los Rayados were another side connected to the former Pachuca youngster, but have also decided against a move. The decision comes after Monterrey confirmed the signing of Lucas Orellana from Cincinnati FC, a central defender to replace Sergio Ramos.
Unlike Chivas, Monterrey would benefit from attacking reinforcements to stregethen the overall squad, but it is deemed that manager Doménec Torrent is happy with the current balance in the team.
Clubs cannot match his wage demands
Reports led us to Mexico City double Club América and Cruz Azul, two teams who have been criticsed for lack of quality up-front, and could benefit from signing Chucky. However, it is said that neither side would be able to meet the financial demands of the former PSV player.
Las Águilas have recently invested heavily in former Newcastle United winger Allan Saint-Maximin, who operates in the same position as Chucky, and believe that spending big on a similar profile of player would do little to strengthen the squad overall. Meanwhile, Cruz Azul have admitted they would be unable to meet the player’s expectations, even if he were to improve the team.
Something will have to give if Chucky is to get a new team before the end of the month. With the World Cup fast approaching, time is running out if he wants to do enough to earn a spot in the summer and convince Javier Aguirre.
