The 22-year-old midfielder has gathered considerable attention after a brilliant display against Trinidad and Tobago.

Sebastian Cordova has been busy making a name for himself in the Liga MX where he has won a regular starting spot with America. Now he is getting a chance to become a star with El Tri.

Last week, he played a starring role in a friendly against Trinidad and Tobago, starting and playing 75 minutes. Now, the 22-year-old is earning headlines and reports suggest top European club teams are showing interest in him.

Portuguese sports newspaper “A Bola” wrote that Benefica are eager to bring the native of Aguascalientes to Portugal during the winter transfer window. Not only Benfica, but Premier League teams like Manchester United and Spanish side Sevilla are said to be taking a closer look. Real Betis – where Andres Guardado and Diego Lainez play – is also poking around.

Cordova made his Liga MX debut while on loan with Necaxa in 2018 and returned to America for the Clausura 2019. To date in the Apertura 2019, Cordova has started 10 games and appeared off the bench in another, totaling 822 minutes. Cordova has 3 goals in his account, two of which came in the Super Clasico against the Chivas.

While these rumors swirl around him, it is not clear that America would sell him this year, because coach Miguel Herrera has said he prefers to see maturity in his players so they have a chance to be contributors with clubs that wish to acquire them.

Cordova is currently attending the Team Mexico training camp ahead of El Tri’s first games in the Concacaf Nations League. Coach Gerardo Martino is expected to give Cordova plenty of playing time against Bermuda and Panama and, if he does well, could compete for a starting position heading toward the World Cup qualifiers.
