Cub León shared a press release on Saturday morning to announce that manager Eduardo Berrizo has stepped down from his duties.
The decision comes after his side suffered a 2-0 defeat to FC Juárez on Friday night, with León sitting in 11th place in the Liga MX Apertura, one point outside of the playoff positions.
Berizzo recently celebrated his one-year anniversary with the club, joining León in September 2024, but felt that he couldn't take the team any further.
León's press release states
"In a noble act rarely seen in football, Eduardo Berizzo has shared that his tenure as Technical Director with Club León has come to an end"Club León, X
Across his year with the club, Berizzo took charge of 44 matches with a record of 15 wins, 11 draws and 12 losses.
His best period in charge was at the start of the Liga MX Clausura, following the surprise signing of Colombian superstar James Rodríguez. To start the calendar year, León picked up eight wins in ten games, going unbeaten until March. However, that first loss, against Santos Laguna, saw La Feria spiral out of control, winning just one game from their final nine matches of the Clausura, ultimately crashing out of the Liguilla in the quarter-finals, at the hands of Cruz Azul.
To start the Apertura, León have struggled to find their rhythm, winning just three games from 11 matches, whilst suffering a 5-0 defeat to Tijuana during matchday nine.
The announcement confirms that Berizzo's coaching staff, Sebastián Rambert, Ernesto Marcucci, Roberto Bonano and Fernando Morelli have all joined Berizzo in the decision to leave the club with immediate effect.
Who will replace Berizzo remains to be seen, but León will be hoping that the successor can have a big enough impact to drive the club into the playoff positions before the end of the campaign.
