Flamengo is in the competition after winning the 2025 Copa Libertadores over Palmeiras. Flamengo defeated Palmeiras 1-0 with a goal from Danilo on November 29, 2025.

This will be the first time both Cruz Azul and Flamengo have played each other in their history. Both teams are qualified for the 2029 FIFA Club World Cup.

The match will be played at the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium in Al Rayyan, Qatar. The winner of the match will play against Pyramids FC in the third round of the competition. The winner of the third round will play in the FIFA Intercontinental Cup Final against PSG.

Cruz Azul has not lost in their last four matches, despite being eliminated from the Apertura 2025 in the semifinals to Tigres. Cruz Azul were eliminated after drawing 2-2 on aggregate with Tigres.
