Ignacio Ambriz has been confirmed as the new manager of Club León, two days after Eduardo Berizzo's decision to leave the club.
León found themselves searching for a new manager as Berizzo left the club in 11th place in the Liga MX Apertura, with a record of three wins, three draws and five defeats.
As such, La Feria sit one point adrift of the playoff positions with six games left to play, hoping that a change at the top will kick the team into gear for a last-ditched push for a post season place.
Ambriz makes his return to the club after a two-year spell with León from 2018 to 2020, during which he guided them to a runners-up finish in the 2019 Clausura before leading them to glory in the 2020 Apertura (Guard1anes), defeating Pumas in the final.

His managerial résumé features an array of Liga MX clubs, including Querétaro, Club América, Chivas, Toluca, Santos Laguna, Puebla, and Necaxa. Yet, his 2020 championship triumph with La Fiera still stands as the pinnacle of his coaching career.
Ambriz becomes the second manager to return to a former club where they won a league title, after Diego Cocca returned to Atlas in August 2025, having led Los Rojinegros to their first league triumph in 70 years back in 2021.
The Mexico City native will kick off his return with a clash against one of his former clubs, Toluca, on Saturday, October 4th. It’s a debut that promises to be a real test for León, as they take on the reigning Liga MX champions, who also sit at the top of the table.
As for the overall ambitions for the club, the first task for Ambriz will be to drive his men back into playoff contention, without major expectation for the team to go deep into the competition.
Looking ahead, León’s priority will be persuading star man James Rodríguez to extend his contract, which is set to expire in December. Securing the Colombian’s renewal would allow the club to reinforce the squad in the summer and mount a stronger challenge in the Liga MX Clausura 2026.
