Shock reports have started to emerge that Colombian superstar James Rodríguez could soon be out the door of León, despite only joining the club in January 2025.
The reports come after Rodríguez failed to start any of their last two games, but the truth is that his form with León has taken a drastic turn since it was announced that the team would be removed from the FIFA Club World Cup, one of the biggest motivations for the former Real Madrid playmaker to sign for La Feria.
At the start of 2025, León won eight of its opening ten matches of the season, going unbeaten until Matchday 11, where they met Santos Laguna. At that point, the side went on to win just one game from the remaining nine Clausura matches, before eventually crashing out at the quarter-final stage, losing to Cruz Azul.
To start the 2025 Apertura, Eduardo Berizzo's side has continued in a similar fashion to end the last campaign, with two wins from six league matches; they also failed to win any of their three games at the Leagues Cup.
Concerns surrounding the team's performances are starting to grow as many of the adoring fans who welcomed the Colombian with open arms are beginning to have their doubts.
Reports suggest that Rodríguez's $5 million contract will be set to expire by the end of December 2025, but with the 2026 FIFA World Cup on the horizon, he will be desperate to find his rythm again, whether it's with La Feria or elsewhere.
Where will James Rodríguez go?
One of the first rumours involving a possible transfer for Rodríguez is with him joining Los Rayados.
Monterrey recently sold fellow Colombian Nelson Deossa to Real Betis, meaning they have an open spot for a foreign player, whilst a move north would give him the chance to reconnect with former teammates Sergio Ramos and Sergio Canales.

The doubt with a possible move to Los Rayados is that Rodríguez is almost a carbon copy of Canales. Both are considered attacking midfielders, gifted with the ball at their feet and are equally set-piece specialists.
If a move to the Estadio BBVA is on the cards, it would likely be as a replacement for Canales, rather than a chance to see both players in the same team.
